Hyena Disease occurred in ten calves aged 12 to 15 months old in 3 farms (A, B and C) in the Iwate Prefecture on March 1991. Nine calves in Farms A and B had been orally administrated a vitamin AD3E premix, but it was unknown whether or not the premix had been given to one calf in Farm C.
The main clinical findings in the cases were marked underdeveloped hindquarters, distinct sloping dorsa and abnormal gait. Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration decreased remarkably in all of the animals, but the plasma 1, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D concentration showed normal range or decreased. Other biochemical examinations did not show a remarkable change. In the pathological examination of No.2, an autopsy revealed a shortening of the femur, tibia, humerus and vertebra.
These results suggested that Hyena Disease may be directly related to hypervitaminosis of Aor/and D3 in the early stage after birth, and indirectly to vitamin D deficiency in the growth stage.
