To improve the results of breeding after calving of dairy cows, the changes of feeding volume, hematic components and plasma progesterone were investigated in 13 cases of dairy cows before and after calving (30 day and 7 days before calving, 7 days, 14 days, 21 days, 30 days, 40 days, 50 days and 60 days after calving).
The 13 cases consisted of 3 groups.
Group A : 6 cows that had the recurrence of distinct estrus 60 days after calving.
Group B : 4 cows that had feeble estrus signs 60 days after calving.
Group C : 3 cows that had no estrus signs 60 days after calving.
The feeding volume (sufficient rate of TDN and DCP) was significantly high in the order of A.B.C., both before and after calving. The body condition score (BCS) decreased in the order of C.B.A. both before and after calving. The cases in which the BCS decreased more rapidly indicated a higher score in plasma NEFA concentration and a lower score in blood sugar levels 7 days after calving.
In hematic componets, the RBC and Ht score were higher in the groups in which the feeding volume was more. The serum Alb concentration and plasma vitamin A concentration after calving were lower in the groups in which the fat mobilization was more.
In the times when plasma progesterone concentration showed more than 1 ng/ml, Group A was faster than Group B, which was faster than Group C. According to this, their recurrence of estrus occurred. And days of the first insemination and the last insemination after calving were shorter, accrding to this order.
These results showed that the feeding volume before calving was related to the recurrence of estrus after calving and fertility after the recurrence of estrus. And also, the lowering of the hepatic function by too much fat mobilization had a bad influence on the breeding function. To control the breeding function after calving, it is necessary to manage the feeding volume and BCS from the dry period.
