A 3-year-old Holstein cow suddenly developed jaundice with blackish-green urine in a dairy from of Akita Prefecture in May, 1991. Although the cow was given treatment as suspected of having leptospirosis etc., she died the next day. Blood examinations revealed marked increases in total bilirubin concentration and GOT. γ GTP.ALP activities with increased creatinine, BUN, and inorganic phosphorus concentration in the sera, and negative reaction for piroplasma in the erythrocytes. Urine examinations showed strongly positive reactions for urobilingen and hemoglobin. Autopsy disclosed marked systemic jaundice, necrotic hemorrhagic foci in the intestine, congestive plaqus in the kidney, yellowish degeneration in the liver, and swollen gall bladder. No parastitism of Fascila hepatica was detected. In bacteriological examination, 109/ g of tissue Clostridium perfringens A were isolated from the small intestins, liver and kidney. Leptospira failed to be detected. From these findings, this case was diagnosed as a typical enterotoxemia involing Clostridium perfringens A infection and then this case was involved jaumdice with blackish-green urine.
