The studies were designed to clarify the influence of the state of parturition, bady weight of calves at the time of birth, and past history of dams on the absorption of immunoglobulins in newborn calves(Japanese Black Cattle). We determined immunoglobulin level in colostrum in 23 dams and serum immunoglobulins and total protein (TP) levels, serum eyme activity, and RBC, Hb values, in their calves. Marked individual differences were cbserved in immunoglobulin level in colostrum collected within 24 hours after delivery. Both IgG and IgA levels tended to be high in multi parous cows as compared with primiparous cows. Mean serum IgG and IgA levels in blood collected within 24 hours after birth also were higher in the calves from multi parous cows than those from primparous cows. Mean IgG and IgA levels in the calves four born through dystocia were lower than those in the calves born thromal delivery. Furthermore, the calves weighing 20 kg or under at the time of birth showed lower IgG and IgA levels than the others. Blood examination revealed positive correlation between TP level, γ-GTP activity and IgG, IgA levels. The result obtained from a pair of twins disclosed that difference in IgG and IgA between these calves was associated with presence anemia.<BR>From these findings, it was suggested that in newborn calves absorption of immunoglobulin in is closely related to dystonia, low body weight of calves at the time of birht, and anemia, as well as immunoglobulin level in colostrum of their dams.
