We investigated the state of incidence of mastitis in cows in our jurisdiction area from 1988 through 1990, and attempted to investigate inherited characteristics of predisposition to mastitis. Mastitis occurred frequently in older cows, in summer, and during perinatal period. Moreover, not a few cows developed mastitis repeatedly. Hereditary charactors revealed thet outset of mastitis is based on constitutional factors, which lie in males and females both in the from of recessive homogeneous and heterogeonus genes. These factors are passed down by the autosomal simple recessive inheritance system. These findings suggest that removal or recombination of constitutional factory predisposed to mastitis after examination of genes in the bull will make the prevention of mastitis possible.
