It appears that some patients with cancer die with functioning, intact immune systems. We know little about the significance of these findings. Is cancer really a manifestation of an immune deficiency or are the immunologic perturbations secondary to the process-further evidence of the systemic nature of this disease? Certainly, the orchestrated activity of the immune system provides some natural defense against malignant disease. A better understanding of this should stimulate rapid advances in the treatment of patients with cancer in all specialties.
