A 52 year old male developed hoarseness from 6 months ago and consulted us. The left vocal cord was fixed and tumorous swelling with smooth surface was noted from the left vocal cord to the subglottic.
Histological examination of the excised specimen revealed only acute inflammation. However, clinical manifestations indistinguishable from those of malignant tumor led us to perform hemilaryngectomy.
The resected tumor was of walnut-sized, with elastic firm consistency. The cut surface was yellowish white. As the result of pathohistological examination, diagnosis of malignant neurilemmoma was made.
After the surgery, 4000R of telecobalt was irradiated. After the surgery, hoarseness still remained but no signs of local recurrence was noted. From the 9th month after surgery, abnormal density was found in chest X-ray. The density gradually increased in size, suggesting poor prognosis.
This case is presented with some discussion on literature.
