Knowledge among dieticians on the fact that consumption of folic acid before conception and during the early period of pregnancy decreases the risk of neural tube defects in infants was surveyed by a postal questionnaire. A total of 237 of the 400 enlisted dieticians took part in this study, a response rate of 59%. It was found that 54% of the responding dieticians were aware of this information. Abstaining from smoking and alcohol, ingesting folic acid supplements, and ingesting well-balanced dietary nutrients had been respectively recommended to young women by 83%, 20%, and 89% of the dieticians. Seventy-nine per cent of the responders thought that all women of reproductive age should be informed of the benefits of periconceptional folic acid. The responses show that most dieticians recognize the physiological significance of folic acid and advise women of childbearing age to eat a well-balanced diet; those who wish to conceive should take a folic acid supplement of 400μg per day.
