Health examinations for the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases were performed on students in two districts. An examination in April 1999 of 1, 542 first-year high school students (794 males and 748 females) for height, body weight, and blood pressure showed that 43 students (20 males and 23 females) had an obesity degree of 50% based on the standard value and a blood pressure with a 95 percentile value in the group that remained above the standard value from a subsequent measurement after 2 months (June). We then carried out a survey of the diet, lifestyle habits, and fatigue symptoms on the 43 obese or hypertensive students and evaluated their characteristics. The association between fatigue symptoms and diet for the students with a high score for mental fatigue symptoms showed a significantly high intake of lipids, processed seasoned foods and pickles, and for those with a low score showed a significantly high intake of miso and milk/dairy products. The lifestyle habits of those students who stayed up later than 23:00 or whose sleeping hours were above or below the range of 7-8 hours induced symptoms of physical and mental fatigue. However, those students who were involved in club activities on non-school days had only a few fatigue symptoms. The results of this survey suggest that students with juvenile obesity or hypertension had nutritional problems such as dietary imbalance and poor lifestyle habits such as late bedtimes.
