The serum leptin, estradiol and progesterone concentrations and the energy intake by female Japanese subjects during the regular menstrual cycle were investigated.Seven Japanese women with a regular menstrual cycle (33.3±2.7 years old with a body mass index (BMI) of 25.1±1.3) were studied. The serum leptin, estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) concentrations, BMI, percent age of body fat, and energy intake were measured in the menstrual, follicular, and luteal phases. The leptin concentration in regularly menstruating Japanese women was highly correlated with BMI (r=0.932, 0.963 and 0.978 in the respective phases; p<0.05 for each) and the percent age of body fat (r=0.912, 0.857 and 0.851, respectively; p<0.05 for each). The serum leptin, estradiol, and progesterone concentrations were associated with the menstrual phase (p<0.05), the leptin and E2 concentrations being lowest in the menstrual phase (p<0.05), and the P concentration being highest in the luteal phase (p<0.01). The energy intake was not linked to the menstrual cycle and leptin concentrations throughout the menstrual cycle. In the menstrual phase, the leptin concentration was inversely correlated with the energy intake. We conclude that a relationship existed between the serum leptin and E2 and P concentrations. The leptin concentration in the menstrual phase was inversely correlated with the energy intake, suggesting that leptin has a role in reproductive events and energy intake by regulating the menstrual cycle.
