The recently invented "Japanese diet sweets" are made by adding polydextrose (a dietary fiber) to ordinary Japanese sweets (nerikiri or kintsuba) and using maltitole instead of sugar. This recipe reduces the number of calories in the new sweets to less than that of ordinary sweets on a weight basis. We studied the effects of these Japanese diet sweets and ordinary sweets on the blood sugar level of diabetics. We found that the new diet sweets significantly suppressed the increase in blood sugar level that occurred with the ordinary sweets. We conclude that the Japanese diet sweets as a food had the same taste quality as ordinary sweets and offerred superior glycemic control. This enables us to recommend the Japanese diet sweets to diabetics as an alternative to ordinary sweets on the market. However, patients should limit the quantity of the sweets consumed due to a transient diarrhea side-effect.
