The status of mineral nutrition was evaluated in male distance runners at a senior high school from 3-day diet records which were made in April (spring), August (summer) and November (autumn). There were no significant differences in the intake levels of energy, protein and carbohydrate per day during each survey period. The fat intake per day was higher in August than in November, but there was no such difference between April and August. The ratios of PFC (P:F:C%) were 14:25:61% in April, 14:27:59% in August and 13:23:64% in November, while the respective rates of protein intake (g) to body weight (kg) were 2.2, 2.3 and 1.9.The mineral intake per day from food was 1, 000-1, 400mg of Ca, 340-420mg of Mg, 12-17mg of Zn, 14-15mg of Fe, 1.8-2.3mg of Cu, 5, 000-6, 000mg of Na and 3, 700-4, 100mg of K, these values being higher than the recommended daily allowance. The major sources of minerals were rice, milk, egg, tofu, spinach, pork and beef. The amount of each mineral in 24-hour urine and the ratio of the urinary excretion to intake of this mineral were 186-237mg and 15-18% for Ca, 68-145mg and 16-42% for Mg, 462-1, 872μg and 0.4-15% for Zn, 125-256μg and 0.15-1.7% for Fe, 41-93μg and 1.8-4.7% for Cu, 2.8-4.9g and 47-85% for Na, and 1.3-3.1g and 34-80% for K, respectively. No significant correlation was apparent for these minerals between the intake and urinary excretion. The creatinine ratios for the urinary excretion of Ca, Mg, Na and K were almost identical in the August and November survey periods. The BMI ratio for the urinary excretion of minerals was 67- to 74-fold the creatinine ratio. The composition ratio of mineral in 24-hour sweat was 2.6-4.8% for Ca, 0.17-0.19% for Mg, 67-84% for Na and 11-29% for K. The total of Na and K accounted for 95-97% of all minerals. It is suggested that the creatinine ratio for the urinary excretion of minerals could be used to estimate whether the mineral intake is proper or not.
