In recent years, a great deal of attention has been paid to the handicapped, but there are few reports on their nutritional status. We evaluated the nutritional status of 33 subjects with severe mental and physical handicaps (18 females, 15 males) based on their resting metabolic rates, anthropometric measurements, blood composition and intakes of nutrients. We compared the measured values with the recommended dietary allowances for the Japanese (4th revision, 1989). All subjects were shorter in height and weighed less than the reference. The body fat percent and arm muscle circumference value were smaller than the reference values in male subjects. The mean resting metabolic rate per kg of body weight was higher than the reference value in all subjects. This is attributable to their lighter body weights. The resting metabolic rate per body surface area was low in most of the subjects, the mean values being 95% of the reference for females and 86% for males. When compared with the reference values, nutrient intakes were insufficient in all subjects except for vitamin A.
