A questionnaire survey was conducted on 200 male and 444 female students to study the relationship between their life style and the degree of healthiness.1) About 80% of the students took meats, fishes, eggs, and foods cooked using oils, but only 50% or less took milk, dairy products, vegetables, soy-bean products and fruits every day. Their nutritional balance was judged poor. The main staple food was boiled rice, followed by noodles and bread. The female students preferred bread compared to the male students. Some (26% in males) skipped breakfast, or took it alone. More than half ate their lunch out and about 30% took it alone, but 70 to 80% took supper at home.2) The physical activity indexes were 0.41 and 0.45 respectively for male and female students. Many students complained of insufficient rest probably because they were restricted in use of leisure time. Those who worked part time accounted for more than 50%, exceeding those who took physical exercises regularly.3) The degrees of their physical, mental and social health all averaged. However, the degree of their social service activities was poor, and their overall healthiness was judged to be "slightly poor". Many students felt that they were taking less than sufficient exercises, nutrition and rest, but were not willing enough to rectify the situation. The higher the degree of insufficiency was, the lower the degree of their health was. The students with lower scores in the nutritional balance and those who skipped meals or took them alone showed a lower degree of health. Among physical exercises, part time work, and laboratory/field work, taking physical exercises was most effective in promoting their health.
