Relationship between Mother and Child regarding Dietary Life.

A survey was conducted among 429 pairs of school children and their mothers regarding their awareness and attitude toward meals. The following result was obtained.1) The major factor that determined children's dietary satisfaction at home and school depended on (a) menu, (b) relationship at the table, and (c) communication with persons who prepared the meal. When taking meals with family or friends and children participated in cooking the meal, their degree of satisfaction was greater. However, children in charge of serving school lunches did not indicate high degree of satisfaction compared to that achieved at home.2) Dietary satisfaction was found great with the mothers who had close communication with the members of their family. They also devoted longer period of time on cooking.3) The following differences were found by observing mothers' awareness and attitude through those of children;(1) Mothers of children who were satisfied with meals at home tended to plan a menu which children disliked and spent longer cooking hours.(2) Children helped with meals when mothers expressed their appreciation.(3) Differences were observed among mothers whose children had less dislikes of food. Those who had closer communication with family did not seem to consider children's likes and dislikes when planning menu.(4) The following differences were found by observing the awareness and attitude of children through those of mothers the differences were found only in their attitude toward foods their children disliked. Children whose mothers did not care about children not eating "foods they did not like" were dissatisfied with meals at home, and disliked many foods. Such lack of active interests in children's behavior and of communication showed effects on the awareness of and attitude toward meals of children.
