We attempted to determine subjective symptoms and urinary catecholamine excretion in female students placed on experimental diets and inflicted with stressors for 12 days. Fourteen students were divided into two groups and placed on two different diets, A and B. Diet A satisfied the dietary requirements and was well balanced with all nutrients. Diet B also satisfied the dietary requirements but was not well-balanced because the proportion of the dairy products, vegetables and fruits was reduced while sweets were increased. The first group was given the diet A for the first six days and then the diet B for the remaining six days. The second group was given the diets in the reverse order. A stressor comprising continuous calculation of math problems was applied for the last three days of the each diet period. Physical examination regarding their height, weight, body temperature, blood pressure and subjective symptoms was performed, and catecholamine excretion in urine was determined. The following results were obtained.1) Subjective symptoms increased in both of the diet groups when the stressor was applied. In those given the diet A, however, changes were not so remarkable on the first day.2) Urinary excretion of catecholamine, especially that of noradrenaline, increased by the stressor. The increase was greater on the first day in the group A than in the diet B.3) Body temperature and blood pressure also rose due to the stressor, especially among those given diet A.4) The differences between the groups given the experimental diets A and B in body temperature, blood pressure, subjective symptoms and urinary catecholamine excretion may be attributable to different dietary constitutions but also to higher contents of vitamin A and C in the diet A than in the diet B.
