On 452 first-year students (227 males and 225 females) of a junior high school in Okayama City, investigations by simple questionnaire were made in terms of "Examination of subjective symptoms" according to the method proposed by the Society for Industrial Fatigue Research. The questionaire also included some questions on the health situation, frequency of food intake and awareness of dietary habits to examine the relation-ship between their health conditions and dietary habits. This survey was conducted in September, 1984.The results obtained are as follows:1) Comparison of the number of subjective complaints between both sexes revealed the significant predominance of complaints in males.2) As to the health situation in terms of awakening of mornings, bowel movement, appetite and self-evaluation of health, there were not so many students in good health for both males and females.3) No difference between sexes was observed in frequency for food intake and scores for nutritive balance as calculated from the frequency.4) As to the awareness of dietary habits in terms of intake of sweets, meals and breakfasts, there were many students with less awareness of the importance of dietary habits for both sexes.5) Students in good health showed a tendency for high scores in nutritive balance. A significant correlation was observed in many items in male students.6) Students with a small number of subjective complaints showed a tendency of higher awareness for dietary habits and a tendency of high scores for nutritive balance. A significant correlation was observed only in male students.7) Students with a small number of subjective complaints showed a tendency of less frequency for intake of soft drinks and higher frequency for intakes of vegetables other than green-yellow ones, milk and eggs. A significant correlation was observed only in male students.8) Examination of the relationship between the number of subjective complaints and the intake frequency for foods in male students using quantification theory II revealed that the number of subjective complaints decreased with a decrease in low intake frequency for soft drinks and increases in intake frequency for milk, fruits and eggs.
