Omega-3 polyenoic acids in fish oils have attracted an intense attention due to recent epidemiolo gical and experimental findings that the fatty acids show a possible prophylactic effect for development of thrombosis and atherosclerosis. This paper deals with fatty acid composition of fish commonly consumed in Japan. Correlations between total lipid contents and individual fatty acid compositions were also investigated. Two hundred eleven samples of 76 kinds of fish obtained in various areas throughout the world in various seasons were purchased from Tsukiji Central Fishery Market in Tokyo and were subjected to fatty acid analyses by gaschromatography. The results obtained are as follows:1) Lipid content varied with the kind of fishes and the season they were caught. Differences in fatty acid composition of fish lipids dependent on the kinds of fish, the areas where they inhabited and the season when they were caught were observed. However, a definite tendency in fatty acid composition dependent on the seasons and areas was not observed.2) Dominant fatty acids in saturated, monoenoic and polyenoic acids were palmitic, oleic and docosahexaenoic acids, respectively. Percentage of ω-3 polyenoic acids was high in the fishes which were caught in autumn and winter and in a season when lipid content was low, and which grew in low temperature areas.3) Significant reverse correlations were observed between the total lipid content and docosahexaenoic acid, ω-3 polyenoic acids, total polyenoic acids or palmitic acid composition, respectively. Significant positive correlations were observed between the lipid content and total monoenoic acids or oleic acid composition, respectively. However, no correlation was observed between the eicosapentaenoic acid composition and total lipid content.
