Nutrition guidance was given using a cinema (16mm, 45 minutes) and a book of comments on cinema to 38 patients (23 males, 15 females) on maintenance hemodialysis using hollow fibers (5 hours per session) three times a week. Their dry weight was 89.2% of the standard body weight on an average. They were ingesting 1, 935 kcal which contained less wheat, potato, fruits, vegetables, legumes and milk and more meat, fish and eggs than the tentative standard volumes prescribed for them. Those with hematccrit (Ht) value of more than 25% were found ingesting more rice, vegetables, meat and fish and less fruits, milk, potato and miso-soybean paste. Those with Ht of less than 20% had more rice, eggs, meat and sugar and less wheat, legumes, vegetables, milk and miso-soybean paste. After nutrition guidance using the labelling method for foods described in the text, 5 out of 9 patients with less than 20% Ht had their value raised from 17.9 to 20.2%. Ht for the remaining 4 patients was unchanged. Those with liver dysfunctions were found ingesting high-energy and high-protein diets. Five out of 6 patients with hypertriglyceridemia showed decrease of serum triglyceride after the nutritional guidance for 2 months. Control of dietary energy and sugar volume were effective for lowering the serum triglyceride level. It was shown that the nutritively balanced food was a key to the nutrition control of hemodialysic patients in addition to total food volume.
