This study was conducted to examine the effects of exercise and diet on serum and liver lipids in rats. These rats were trained and fed experimental diets from 10th to 20th week after birth.Male Wistar rats were divided into high carbohydrate (C-dietary) group and high fat (F-dietary) group; C-dietary group was fed 70% corn starch and 15% soybean oil in the energy ratio whereas F-dietary group was fed 35% soybean oil and 50% corn starch in the energy ratio. These two groups were subdivided into four groups of 7 rats each. That is, sedantary group (NE), forced swimming on 6 days/wk for 20 minutes/day group (20-E) and swimming for 40 minutes/day group (40-E1 and 40-E2). (40-E1 was killed immediately after swimming for 40 minutes on the final day, while 40-E2 was killed on the final day before exercise.)1) Body weight of NE was significantly higher than exercise groups in the order of NE, 20-E, 40-E1, 2, and the body weight in C-dietary groups tended to become greater than F-dietary groups. Adipose tissue weight of NE of C-dietary group was the highest of all the groups (p<0.01).2) Serum total cholesterol (chol) and TBA level were higher in F-dietary groups than in C-dietary groups, and decreased in exercise groups (20-E and 40-E2) in both of C- and F-dietary groups. Serum triglyceride (TG) andα-LP of C-dietary groups were significantly higher than those of F-dietary groups, and TG was lower in 40-E1, 2 than in NE and 20-E of F-dietary groups, α-LP was higher in 20-E than in 40-E1, 2 of C-dietary groups (p<0.01).3) Liver total lipid (TL) and chol of 40-E1, 2 in F-dietary groups were significantly higher than those of 40-E1, 2 of C-dietary groups, but TBA level in the liver of NE and 20-E of C-dietary groups was higher than those of NE and 20-E of F-dietary groups, and TL, chol and TBA level of the liver decreased in exercise groups of C-dietary groups while in F-dietary group, the effect of exercise on the liver lipid components was not observed.
