The serum lipid of the female gymnasts before and after the 5-week energy restriction period prior to a contest was examined and the data was compared with that of a control group. Energy intake was controled by two means; a free menu of low-energy (Experiment 1) and a prescribed menu (Experiment 2) of lower fat and higher carbohydrate than Experiment 1.The results obtained are summarized as follows.1) Total cholesterol (T-Chol), HDL cholesterol (HDL-Chol) and triglyceride (TG) decreased after the energy restriction period in both Experiments 1 and 2, but TBA value decreased in Experiment 2 when the serum lipid before and after the energy restriction period was compared.2) When the experimental group and the control group were compared, T-Chol, HDL-Chol, α-lipoprotein (α-LP) and α-LP/(β-LP+preβ-LP) levels of the experimental group were higher, and TBA value and TG levels of the control group were higher both in Experiments 1 and 2.In conclusion, this study showed that TG and TBA values in the serum decreased and α-LP/(β-LP+preβ-LP) value increased on account of physical exercises and energy restrictions indicating a favorable turn.
