The intestinal absorption rate of amino acids in rats fed the diets of various protein levels were compared in vitro using an everted sac technique and in vivo a perfusion technique. By everted sacs of mid-small intestine, the rate of transport (per sac weignt) against a concentration gradient of L-histidine was higher in the non-protein diet rats as compared with 5% and 20% casein diet animals. Also, the rate of transport of each amino acid from 18 amino acid equimolar mixture was higher in non-protein diet rats than in other diet animals. Using a perfusion technique in vivo, the absorption rate (per intestinal weight) of individual amino acids from the amino acid mixture differed and these absorption rates in non-protein diet rats were higher than that of 20% casein diet rats, but the absorption rate to whole small intestine was almost the same with each other rats.
