It is well known that sweetening agents are frequently used by diabetics. It is not clear, however, whether the use of agents has desirable influence on diet-therapy of diabetics or not. Therefore, 150 diabetics who were members of the Atago-Kai of Jikei University School of Medicine were studied to find out the actual condition of the use of sweetening agents.As for the results, the author confirmed that sweetening agents can not be denied when properly used for treatment of diabetics, and the merits and demerits of the agents were pointed out.The author recognized significant role that publications of health-care organizations play in providing patients knowledge of agents. But, unfortunately, few patients had correct knowledge of agents. The author emphasized that knowledge in regard of calories and the proper usage of sweetening agents should be transmitted through magazines and periodicals published by health-care organizations.
