The effects of dietary calorie, fat and carbohydrate on the plasma amino acid pattern and plasma amino acid ratio, recommended by Whitehead, in rats fed low protein diets were investigated. The isonitrogenous low protein diet containing low calorie or high fat caused a remarkable increase in valine, leucine and isoleucine levels of plasma in rats and lowered the plasma amino acid ratio, but lysine and serine levels of plasma were fairly decreased. The threonine level of plasma in rats on low calorie diets was also decreased. The effects of three kinds of carbohydrates contained in low protein diets on the plasma amino acid pattern of rats were studied and it was shown that the levels of lysine, arginine and histidine in the plasma of rats on a high sucrose diet decreased and also, branched chain amino acids and the phenylalanine levels of plasma in rats on a high glucose diet tended to decrease.
