This study was conducted as an attempt to test the curative effect of rice bran oil in atherosclerosis.Thirty male rabbits were given an atherogenic diet containing 2% cholesterol and 10% lard for 140 days. Another series of 15 animals served as controls throughout the experimental period of 318 days. Four animals of each group were sacrificed at 140 days. The remaining animals of the atherogenic diet were then transferred to 2 diets, i.e., stock diet, stock diet +10% rice oil for 178 days.At 140 days, the atherogenic animals showed enlargement of liver, kidney and spleen, higher levels of serum, aorta and liver cholesterol. Serum cholesterol rose to about 20 times that of the control and aorta grading scores were high. At 318 days, animals on the test diets in comparison with those on the atherogenic diet (140 days) showed a decrease in organ enlargement, cholesterol levels and aorta scores.Of the 2 test groups, animals receiving rice oil, though not distinctly seemed to present somewhat more satisfactory results. However, more severity can still be observed even by the inclusion of rice oil in a diet previously containing both cholesterol and lard than a diet continously free of such supplements.
