Effect of Light on the Growth of Animals and Vitamin D Metabolism (Report 1):Effects of white fluorescent lamp on vitamin D deficient rats

The relation of the sun light to vitamin D nutrition has been recognized since old times, and the effect of the sun light on the fertilizing growth of the live-stock is marked recently from the practical side. However, there are some reports that vitamin D production from provitamin D in the circumference of great cities is not recognized in vitro experiment because Dorno-ray (280-310mμ) in the sun light which is necessary to produce vitamin D from provitamin D at skin is lost. And no proof is formed that effect of the sun light on animal growth is caused only by the effect on vitamin D nutrition.Then we planned to clear the effect of the light on the growth of animals and the metabolism of vitamin D.Growth and food intake were observed and measeured using Whister strain male rats of about 40g dividing these into a normal food group and a vitamin D deficient ricketic food group, and the latter group was again divided into light room group and dark room group. For the light source, white 40W fluorescent lamp was used and the animals were given mean 45 lux intensity of illumination 13 hours per day.After there appeared the difference in growth of each group, vitamin D2, D3 and ergosterol were dosed to the each group and the fraction of vitamin D sulfate excreted into urine were examined by elution analysis by G-25 sephadex and extinction analytical method. The results were obtained as follows:1. Those given light surpassed those given no light in growth even by lower intensity of light of white fluorescent lamp which does not contain Dorno-ray almost compared to natural sun light, and food efficiency showed special difference.2. The effect of light on the excretion of the fraction of vitamin D sulfate was not recognized in case of vitamin D dose, but effect of light was recognized in the dose of ergosterol and vitamin D deficient, from which it was obvious that the light relates to vitamin D metabolism.
