The relation between actual calorie intake and climatic environment was examined. For the purpose, the data of the national nutrition survey that has been carried out by the Ministry of Welfere were used. Atwater factors were adopted for calculation of calorie of food in this survey. The calorie intake per man per day at May, August, November 1952 and February 1953 was observed for about 15000 persons in 34 cities in Japan. The external monthly temperature in these cities was also observed. These results are shown in Tab. 1-3. Tab. 4 shows those summary results. From the results obtained for 15000 persons in 34 cities, it was recognized that the actual calorie intake increased by 2.9% for each 10°C decrease in the external temperature and the calorie decreased by 3.2% for each 10°C increase in the external temperature. It was indicated that there was a certain tendency; in lower temperature the calorie intake increased and in higher temperature the calories decreased. (Tab. 4) These tendencies were observed also by the scattered diagram shown in Fig. 1.The correlation coefficient between the actual calorie intake and the external temperature was calculated in the case of Tokyo. (r)=-0.543±0.112 (Fig. 2) (r) is not so high but it is over 4 times P. E. r. It has the statistical significance.
