In order to investigate how the water droplet on the leaf surface influences on freezing of plant leaves, primary leaves of soybean seedlings were contacted with water droplet(s) and were cooled with the radiative cooling apparatus. As the results, mean freezing temperature of leaves treated with a water droplet (r≈1mm) were significantly higher than that of leaves had dry surface. The leaves sprayed with water (mean mass of water≈138mg) froze at the temperatures higher than leaves contacted by a droplet. When a little of water presented on the leaf surface, leaves often froze spontaneously before freezing of water on them. In the most cases leaves were easily freed from supercooling and froze simultaneously with freezing of water on the leaf surface. However as degree of supercooling was small, freezing of water on the leaf surface did not always induce inoculation to freezing of leaves and the time-lag existed between freezing of water and that of leaf.According to the above experiments, the results showed that water on the leaves is injurious to freezing of plants by frost or low temperature. The effect of ice inoculation on freezing of leaves became even stronger with increasing in the water mass on the leaf surface.
