The main purposes of this paper are firstly, to examine the validity of the climatic productivity index of paddy rice, which has been proposed in the previous report (Sugihara and Hanyu, 1980), by comparing with actual data of field rice production, and secondly, to clarify the geographical distribution of several factors in relation to YP.The mean YP at the suitable heading date, at which maximum YP is achieved, YP0, was compared with the mean yield at each region in Japan. YP0 values in the high production regions of more than 550kg/10a were found to be always greater than 780kg/10a (Fig. 2). From this result, it was thought that YP may be used as the index of climatic productivity which gives potential productivity of paddy rice under the given climatic conditions.YP variation due to differences in heading dates showed 4 types (A, B, C and D). They distributed regularly from A-type in northern Japan to C-and D-types in south-western Japan, as shown in Fig. 1-e. This regularity was related to the change in the values of the climatic elements which constitute YP (Figs. 3&4).
