The reaction behaviors of oxide-powders, MgO, Al2O3, CaO, BaO, TiO2, Fe2O3, UO2 and V2O5, which were formed by thermal decomposition of salts or hydrates, were examined in the various reaction systems, and summarized in connection with the preparation histories of the powders. In many cases, the reactivity of powders was greatly influenced by their heat treatment histories, and closely correlated with a phase-boundary reaction at the initial reaction step. For the search of the surface behaviors occurred at transition stage before the attainment of steady state of the reaction, the useful applications of thermal analysis were done as a non-isothermal technique which differs essentially from a conventional isothermal method.
