This paper examines how electronic factories located in the Tone River Basin have changed their functions due to the Japanese electronic industries penetration overseas from the latter half of the 1980s to the first half of the 1990s. The key points of this paper are: (1) The movement of mass production factories of audio-products from the Tone River Basin to foreign countries; and how other factories have changed over to experimental factories of pre-mass production. (2) The main factories of electronic parts makers are promoting a high degree of specialization of their products. (3) Finished electronic product makers, such as personal computers and automated-teller machines, are trying other strategies to stay competitive. Some examples of this are producing products both domestically and overseas, changing over facilities to outsourcing of products, and keeping their main mass production factories located in the Tone River Basin.
