Tubes made of Hydroxyapatite (HA) and HA-coated titanium were implanted into the cervical tracheas of dogs. In 10 HA tubes, granulation tissue at the end of the tube was seen in only one case.
In 4 HA-coated titanium tubes, granulation tissue was never seen. In composite grafts both ends were HA-coated titanium, and the intermediate area was composed of silicone.
The cervical tracheas of 4 dogs were resected and replaced with composite grafts made of silicone and ceramics. The longest term afterimplantation was 665 days.
All 4 dogs survived without any complications or tracheal stenosis.
