A 58, year-old woman with an abnormal shadow on chest X-ray films was admitted for further studies. Her physical and biochemical examinations revealed no significant abnormalities. The chest X-ray films showed a round mass, 3 cm in diameter, in the left posterior mediastinum, and CT scan demonstrated a low density mass adjacent to the lower thoracic vertebrae and the descending aorta, which showed very high intensity in T2-weighted imaging on MRI.
Left thoracotomy was performed, and an elastic-hard cyst containing 6 ml of milky fluid and some soft fatty tissue was completely resected. The pathological diagnosis was cystic lymphangioma.
We collected reports of 53 cases of mediastinal lymphangioma in Japan only 5 were in the posterior mediastinum.
