For the past 17 years, 667 patients underwent surgical resection for lung cancer. Of these, 103 patients died within one year after surgery. Twenty patients were excluded from the analysis, because of unsatisfactory follow-up. Of 83 evaluable patients, 65 died of recurrent disease and 18 other causes. The postoperative stages of 65 patients who died of their disease were as follows : stage I in 11 patients, stage II in 5, stage III in 37 and stage IV in 12.<BR>According to curability of these patients, 19 (29%) underwent complete resection and 4 (71%) incomplete resection. On the other hand, the causes of 18 patients who died of no cancerous disease were as follows : pneumonia in 7, bronchial fistula in 2, thoracic bleeding in 2, radiation pneumonitis in 2, myocardial infarction in 1, cardiac failure in 1, pulmonary embolism in 1, occulsion of mesenteric artery in 1 and SIADH in 1. Of these, 5 patients died within one months after surgery. Based on these results, we indicated the importance of preoperative staging and postoperative care in surgical treatment of lung cancer.
