Thymoma with extensive cystic degeneration-a case report

A 40-year-old female had been told she had an abnormal chest X-ray shadow 6 years earlier. An anterior mediastinal benign tumor was diagnosed and resected. The tumor contained a cyst with a thick fibrous wall. The cut surface revealed a dark brown, semi-solid mass and a soft gray tumor. The histological diagnosis was a thymoma with extensive cystic degeneration. We suspected that this tumor resulted from hemorrhagic necrosis of the thymoma.
