Surgical treatment of pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas

We recently treated four patients with pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas. Three had solitary arteriovenous fistulas and one had bilateral arteriovenous fistulas. They all received surgical treatment, in which both the efferent and afferent vessels had been sutured directly inside the saccular fistula. This surgical procedure was first reported by Kaneda et al in 1978, and we think this procedure is superior to enucleation of fistula. We hope this procedure will be the first choice for the surgical treatment of pulmonary arteriovenous fistulas.
