We used Silicone material to close the defects left after resection of chest wall in 11 patients, eight with invasive carcinoma of lung, one with squamous cell carcinoma of thymus, one with fibrous dysplasia, and one with flail chest and hemopneumothorax due to trauma.
Replacement with silicone material was of extremely useful because of its desirable rigidity and easy manipulation.
Neither paradoxical movement of the chest nor structural change of the prostheses occurred postoperatively in any of the 11 patients. No disturbances of respiration or chest wall movements and no infection accompanied the use of this material.
However, three patients had local retention of serous discharge and chest pain, so the prosthesis was removed.
Four patients died of metastatic lung cancer 4-11 months after operation. Survival periods of 3 to 49 months were recorded for the other seven patients.
The operative results of chest wall reconstruction were satisfactory in this series. It is concluded that silicone is suitable as a prosthetic material in the repair of chest wall defects.
