This paper tries to explain preposition/postposition missing phenomena in null operator constructions or in simple sentences. I argue that the occurrence of such preposition/postposition-less NPs is explainable in terms of Adverbial Theta Role (ATR) assignment (to the NP occurring in an adjunct position or outside of the subcategorization domain) as opposed to Major Theta Role (MTR) assignment (to the subject or object). I make an assumption that only an NP assigned an MTR must be Case marked. From this it follows that NPs assigned an ATR are free from the regulations of the Case filter. The immunity of the Case filter is argued to be a core property of the phenomena under consideration both in English and Japanese.
