In performing in vivo experiments in cancer thermochemotherapy was used heating instrument RF I. V. (8MHz radiofrequency current heating system for small animals)
We studied the heating ability and heating conditions of this instrument using a phanotm and subcutaneous implanted solid tumor of Yoshida sarcoma. In these experiments fixed coditions of applicator and bolus were set in heating up a solid tumor of Yoshida sarcoma 10mm × 10mm ×5mm in size, implanted into a rat's leg. Both upper and lower applicator 50mm in diameter were used to heat steadily and effectively the subcutaneous implanted Yoshida sarcoma. 0.3% NaCl solution was heated to the target temperature and inserted into the bolus on the tumor side which was then closed. In an attempt to chill the other side of the tumor 0.3% NaCl solution at 18-20°C was circulated in the bottom bolus. Using RF heating at 42-45°C under these same conditions, efficacy in tumor growth inhibition was observed even with RF heating alone. Moreover, the tumor core temperature, the temperature directly beneath the tumor and the rectal temperature were measured simultaneously. It was found that the core temperature during heating was steady, while the temperature directly beneath the tumor was lower than the core temperature by 0.2-1.0°C, and the rectal temperature remained at 40°C or less.
Under the same conditions but using a different method of heating, we compared the efficacy in tumor growth inhibition and heating conditions of water-bath heating with the aforementionated RF heating.
As regards efficacy in tumor growth inhibition, RF heating was clearly observed to be stronger to the equivalent of about 1°C when compared with water-bath heating. As for rectal temperature, it was 40°C or more with water-bath heating, while with RF heating it remained at 40°C or less.
In this paper the RF heating method for small animals and its usefulness were made clear.
