As a new method, we have developed an implant heating system (IHS) and made interstitial hyperthermia on VX7 rabbit tumor model using this system. With two cancer models of domestic rabbits by implantation of VX7 carcinoma, hyperthermia was applied by IHS as follows ; The tumor model of lower thigh muscle : Hyperthermia was made on one side and the other side was used as control, the effects of a single treatment were evaluated by the decrease of the tumor volume and weight. The tumor model of tongue : Hyperthermia was applied on 5 rabbits and another 5 were used as control. The effects of hyperthermia were observed by macro- and microscopic examination. In the lower thigh tumor model, the average tumor volume and weight of hyperthermia group were 15.7 ± 2.7cm3, 21.5±1.4g, while those of control group were 34.9 ±6.6cm3, 38.7 ± 3.5g. The differences of both group were statistically significant (p <0.01). In the tongue tumor model, the remarkable regression of the tumor of hyperthermia group was noticed compared with that of control group. Microscopically, coagulation necrosis around the implant was recognized. The tumor cells around the necrosis were degenerative and the vessels were dilated with stasis or thrombosis. In conclusion, hyperthermia by IHS was proved to be effective on oral malignant tumor by macro- and microscopical studies. This system might be usefull in the treatment of human oral cancer.
