An ultrasound thermometry system using the nonlinear phenomena was developed and a feasibility study for tissue phantoms and anesthetized pigs were made.<BR>In this system, the nonlinear phenomena which is caused by a higher frequency pulse superposed on a lower frequency pulse wave is used to measure the change in acoustic characteristics related to the acoustic attenuation in a tissue. The received echo in analyzed and temperature rise is calculated from the acoustic properties obtained before and after heating. Fabricated system is consisted with a mechanical sector scanner and main frame with a color monitor. The distribution of the temperature rise with a measurement area of 6 × 11 cm is calculated within 1 minute, and displayed together with the ultrasound B-mode image. Experimental results show reasonable temperature rise profiles and small deviations within 2-3 degrees from the maximum temperature rise value of 10 degrees obtaind by a fiber thermometer located in heated area of the pigs thigh.
