Five patients with unresectable pancreatic carcinoma were treated with radio-hyperthermia. Radiotherapy was given to the pancreas using X rays. Total dose of 40 to 50 Gy was administered to the pancreatic tumor.
Hyperthermia of 4 to 26 times was performed with 13.56 MHz radiofrequency (RF) capacitive heating equipment (OMRON HEH 500C).
Tumor temprature was measured by Copper-Constantan thermocouples in 2 cases. The maximum temperature were 39.5°C and 42.3°C.
Remarkable regression of tumor was observed in 1 case by CT. Intratumour necrosis was observed in other 1 case. Value of CA19 -9 was reduced less than a half in another 2 cases. The remainder had complicasion of carcinomatous peritonitis and had no response.
Survival ranged from 5 to 14 months and median survival was 9 months.
Causes of death were gastrointestinal bleeding and tumour death because of metastasis.
Autopsy was done in 3 cases. Disappearance or extensive necrosis of pancreatic tumour were observed in 2 cases.
