In shallow seas or bays both pelagic and benthic communities play an important role in ecosystem function. Until recently the contribution of benthic ecology to biological oceanography has reportedly been relatively slight. However, evidence is emerging to show that the benthos is sometimes crucial in understanding the dynamics of marine ecosystems. For example, the microphytobenthos makes a significant contribution to total primary production in some bays, and interactions with the benthos alter the pelagic energy flow. In spite of these findings, the contribution of the benthic community in many shallow seas or bays is still poorly understood. Therefore, we briefly reviewed studies on both the benthic community and biological production, and discussed the importance of the benthic community in coastal oceanography.
