Analysis of benthic algal biomass accrual using the logistic model.

Using the logistic model, biomass accrual was analyzed in the algal communities developed in three different current regimes at 39, 67 and 137 cm s<SUP>-1</SUP>. The analysis of accuracy using the Akaike information criterion indicated that the logistic model well described the biomass accrual in each current regime compared with the exponential growth and Gompertz models. The intrinsic growth rate and carrying capacities were estimated by the linear relationship between the algal growth rate and biomass. The estimated growth curves explained over 80 % of the total variation in the algal biomass in each current regime. The carrying capacity was maximized at 67 cm s<SUP>-1</SUP>, while the intrinsic growth rate decreased as the current velocity rose. This result shows that the logistic model is useful in characterizing the pattern of benthic algal biomass accrual.
