Seasonal variations of algal communities in the paddy water and air-dried paddy soil were investigated. Total abundance in the paddy water were greatest in June and thereafter decreased rapidly. Chlamydomonas spp. and Nitzschia palea were dominant in the paddy water, and species composition varied depending on the sampling stations or the sampling time. Algal abundance in paddy soil increased gradually during the flooded period. Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus microspina, Scenedesmus ecornis, Chlorococcum spp., Trichormus variabilis and Leptolyngbya distincta were dominant in paddy soil throughout the experimental period. It was suggested that algal community in paddy soil was little influenced by dramatic environmen-tal changes from flooding and agricultural practices.
