The diffusive flux of nutrients from sediment and nutrient regeneration within the overlying water was estimated at a eutrophic estuarine lagoon, Lake Shinji, in summer. As for phosphate and manganese, the continuous flow incubation with filtered bottom water and intact sediments gave a similar efflux with the values calculated from the temporal change in phosphate and manganese concentrations in the water column at the center of the lake. The positive correlation (r = 0.79, p<0.003) between these elements in both estimations suggests that hydrous manganese oxide affects the sedimental efflux of phosphate. Little efflux of ammonium was observed during the continuous incubation of intact sediments, although an efflux of 17-64 mg-m-2⋅d-1 was obtained by calculation from the temporal change in concentration in the water column at the center of the lake. Therefore, regarding phosphate and ammonium accumulated in the bottom water of this lake, phosphate is derived from the sediment (diffusive flux), while ammonium is derived mainly from regeneration within the overlying water.
