Lake Nakaumi and Lake Shinji show large density differences between their upper and lower waters due to stable stratification. Weak vertical transport of oxygen from the upper layer, together with large oxygen demand from bottom sediments, often causes depletion of dissolved oxygen in the lower layers of these lakes. In brackish lakes, internal waves are often generated by external factors such as tidal and wind drift effects.
We have developed a density-controlled neutral buoy to measure the internal waves in Lake Nakaumi and Lake Shinji. By adjusting the buoy's density to match that of the halocline, we were able to monitor the vertical oscillations of the halocline.
After brief experiments (August 29 to 30, 1994 and July 7 to 17, 1995), we found that our neutral buoy could measure halocline oscillations with periods almost identical to those estimated theoretically from independently measured parameters of density stratification in these lakes. Our neutral buoy proved to be very useful for internal wave observation.
