The vertical distribution of salinity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen saturation, and the concentrations of phosphorus, nitrogen and chlorophyll a in brackish Lake Nakanoumi ware surveyed during 1984-1986. The halocline was observed at 2-6m depth in the main basin of the lake for almost a year. But it sometimes disappeared after strong winds. The density gradient of the halocline was largest at the mouth of the Japan Sea, and it gradually decreased as distance increased from the sea. The density gradient tended to be large in summer and small in winter.<BR>The halocline prevents the transportation of substances between the surface layer and the bottom layer. Accordingly, phosphorus concentration was very high at the bottom layer below the halocline due to release from the bottom mud, whereas it was very low at the surface layer above the halocline. The growth of phytoplankton was limited by phosphorus practically throughout the year, but rarely by nitrogen.
