In a eutrophic lake, the southern basin of Lake Biwa, the vertical distribution of barium shows a distinctive pattern : Concentrations of barium in both particulate and dissolved forms reach a maximum at a depth around the thermocline. The depth at which the peak appears coincides well with that at which particulate manganese accumulates. These characteristics of the geochemical behavior of barium are discus-sed in relation to its adsorption onto hydrous manganese oxide and the manganese redox cycle, namely, the reduction of MnO2 to Mn2+ in the anoxic hypolimnion, and the reoxidation of the Mn2+ to MnO2 in the oxic epilimnion. The contiguity of the anoxic and oxic waters, for which the term "MnO2/Mn2+ redox front" is adopted, is specifically noted.
