A theoretical model is presented for analyzing the motion of suspended matter in a gravity wave field, under the assumption that the suspended matter and the fluid behave like a particlefluid two phase flow.<BR>By assuming that this flow can be treated as the perfect-fluid and irrotational flow, basic equations governing the particle-fluid two phase flow and the motion of the suspended matter are derived. A numerical analysis based on the Galerkin finite-element method is then carried out to obtain the velocity and suspended matter concentration distributions for various values of the non-dimensional parameters. The main results obtained in this analysis are as follows : 1) The horizontal velocity component is in phase with the water surface. 2) As the non-dimensional fall velocity of the suspended matter ws becomes less or the non-dimensional diffusion coefficient Dz becomes greater, the amplitude of the horizontal velocity component becomes greater. 3) As the porosity of the bed becomes less, the horizontal velocity component becomes closer to that of a fluid without suspended matter. 4) As ws/Dz becomes less, the phase difference between the suspended matter concentration and the water surface becomes greater.<BR>Furthermore, in order to investigate the particle-fluid two phase flow in the vicinity of the bottom, KAJIURA's (1968) turbulent boundary layer theory is used, and the mean suspended matter concentration is assumed to be a function of depth only. The amplitude of the horizontal velocity component in the boundary layer is always less than that of a fluid without suspended matter, and the phase difference between them is very small.
